What is BitLocker?
BitLocker is the full-disk-encryption feature that is used by Microsoft Windows. Designed to protect computer at-rest-data from theft or unauthorized access. It does this by encrypting the entire drive it's applied to, meaning that the data would be unreadable if the drive is lost, stolen, or accessed without the proper authentication key.
Find Your BitLocker Recovery Key
Locate Your Recovery Key
The most convenient place for the key is within your Microsoft account; although, t could be on a USB drive, or a printed document.
Assuming you have your PC set up with a Microsoft account, BitLocker recovery key is either at:
- https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey - for Enterprise accounts, or
- https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey - for Personal accounts.
Enter the Recovery Key
Once you have logged in, you'll find a page that looks like this.
The Device Name should match the name of your comptuer, and the Key ID should match what is displayed on the screen as a reference. Drive column denotes the type of drive; an Operating System Volume (OSV) where Windows is installed, or an additional drives (FDV: Fixed Data Volumes).
Access Your PC
Once you have successfully entered the Recovery Key, your computer should be able to acecss the drive and operate normally.
